Introduction:

The course is designed for people with substantial life experience who want a second chance in education. No previous qualifications are necessary, just the determination to work hard and succeed.

Access courses are intended for adults who do not have traditional sixth-form or vocational qualifications, allowing them to prepare for, and gain entry to, degree and other higher education programmes.

Entry Requirements:

You must have a real interest in the subject area and be working towards or have achieved level 2 literacy and numeracy. There is likely to be a written assessment exercise at interview. To apply go to:

Course Details:

This course will serve as an excellent foundation for students with an interest in science in the criminal justice system.

You will study the following modules:

  • Study skills
  • GCSE English Equivalence
  • GCSE Mahs Equivalence

Specialist topics studied include the sources of law, law and morality, crime and the administration of criminal law.

You will study the Criminal Law in detail, focussing on assaults and murder, together with their defences. There will be the opportunity to learn about the Law of Contract and the Law of Tort (civil wrongs).

Chemistry The study of chemistry is a requirement for entry into most science-based courses at University. This course covers a balanced range of topics, including the structure of the atom, chemical bonding, reaction rates, the Periodic Table, the properties of some important elements and their compounds, and the chemistry of carbon compounds.

Biology This has a broad base and includes recognising structures of DNA and RNA. It focuses on both animal and human biology.

Course Assessment:

A wide variety of learning activities is covered including lectures, practical-based laboratory work, and group and class discussions as well.

Assessment takes the form of presentations, research assignments, practicals, class exercises, reports and testsStudents produce a portfolio of work relating to their Compulsory Units and Specialist Units and undertake an examination in their Specialist units.

The Access to HE Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification and you will need to achieve a minimum 60 credits with 45 credits at level 3.

Course Progression:

Degree (BSc) courses in Forensic Science are available and this course is specifically designed for learners who might wish to progress to these. It is also a good foundation for those with an interest in a wider range of courses in the analytical, biological, biomedical and agricultural fields.

In recent years students on our parallel BTEC Diploma have entered university to study Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Science, Law and Psychology. The Access to HE Diploma is part of the Common Access Framework (CAF), which encourages progression for learners into HE.
