Careers Brief - English DipHE
Overview
The DipHE in English offers you the opportunity for progression onto an Honours degree programme and direct job entry, although the advantages of being an Honours graduate can be significant for many careers.
English graduates go into a wide variety of occupations. The excellent written and verbal skills you develop on your course, in addition to other transferable skills (such as organising your work, IT, working independently and to deadlines) are of value to most employers.
To help you clarify your personal career direction, use the Prospects Planner and other tools. For links, go to the main Career Planning section of this Guide. Some options may require an Honours degree qualification and perhaps additional study and training.
Subject related careers, include: creative writing; teaching; TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language); journalism; publishing; public relations; marketing and sales; public sector management; TV programme researcher; advertising copywriter; librarian; bookseller; arts administrator; performing arts.

Further Study
On successful completion of the DipHE, you will be able to enter the final year of the BA (Hons) English degree at the University of Winchester to achieve an Honours degree.
To search for other suitable Honours degree courses, go to www.ucas.com/ (UCAS - Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Use the university/college links for course details. Entry point could depend on the overlap between courses, your grades and experience but could be into the final year.
You will need to use UCAS to apply for courses. Contact the Course Tutor of your chosen course to find out your position, before you make your formal application.
Find out how much this will cost you. Where is the funding coming from? Go to the university/college site for information on costs and finance and to www.direct.gov.uk/uni/ for additional help with student support.
With a good Honours degree (First or 2.1), you could progress onto an appropriate higher level Masters and/or PhD doctorate. This could be to develop your area of study to a more in-depth academic level or gain other specialist training.
For information on all postgraduate courses and research, go to the national online directory at www.prospects.ac.uk/links/pgstudy/ .
