Family Time Out to Boost Skills

Promoting skills and family learning is the name of the game for a new lottery funded project being run inpartnership with The Bournemouthand Poole College.

The ‘Time Out’ project is aimed at families living in and around Alderney, Boscombe, Canford Heath, Hamworthy, West Howe and Townsend areas, encouraging families to plan and organise two freetrips out.

Time Out Together

Sue Sharkey, head of family learning at The College said, “Those participating get lots of help and encouragement in researching, planning and organising day trips. Venues could include a trip to Monkey World, the Tank Museum, Russell Cotes, the Oceanarium or just a day on the Jurassic Coast. It’s about encouraging families to work and study together, and all we ask in return for the free trip is that they record their day out as part of the project and are willing to share stories with others.”

Radio station Hope FM is also partnering the project, and anyone willing to will be encouraged to visit the radio station and maybe even take part in a broadcast about their trip.

Sue added, “There are lots of exciting ways to help families, especially if parents find it a bit of struggle to help with homework and the like. Projects such as this make the family learninga fun exercise and can lead on to all sorts of future family bonding and learning.”

The trips can be planned or organised by parents, grandparents or carers, or referrals can be made by those working with families such as socialworkers, playworkers etc. To join the free family ‘Time Out’ project you must be living in the specified areas and have children aged between 7 – 12 years of age.
