THE TASTE OF TRAINING SUCCESS
FOR RYVITA STAFF

A group of production staff from the Ryvita factory in Poole are enjoying the taste of success having recently completed the level 2 NVQ in Business Improvement Techniques under Train to Gain. The training, delivered by The Bournemouth and Poole College, was customised to suit the Ryvita teams’ requirements and has already proved to be beneficial.

Bobby Gray, Training Manager at Ryvita is delighted with the results. “The training has allowed the staff to develop new skills and also empowered them to take responsibility for their own working area. By studying for this qualification they have identified savings and efficiencies resulting in real cost savings in process time. I am very impressed. The college team have been very professional and responsive and I have now recommended them to another food manufacturing company.”

Ryvita was set up in 1925 producing one of the first packaged goods in the bakery field. Since then the business has gone from strength to strength and is one of the UK's top food manufacturers.

Julie-Anne Houldey, Director of Marketing at The College commented, “This is an excellent example of how The Bournemouth and Poole College is working hard to support local business and industry. Our dedicated Business Enterprise team offer an integrated support and advisory service, and employers are telling us that our flexibility and the way we can tailor any training to suit individuals and the company-specific needs is proving to be beneficial to their organisations.”

Despite the recession, companies are being urged to consider staff training as a way to keep their business ahead of the game. The government has put aside huge investment into helping UK workers up-skill and re-skill, with unprecedented access to free training or training grants. Julie-Anne added, “Our business advisors can provide a detailed training needs analysis and help identify where you could develop your staff. We can then signpost you to the various funding streams available and fast-track access to relevant training.”

Ryvita has been one such company to take advantage of the support and advice available, with the benefits manifesting themselves immediately. Chris Beechey from The College has been working alongside the Ryvita team and has been really impressed by their enthusiasm and commitment. “Most of those who have taken courses now want to go on to learn something else. One worker was promoted from supervisor to manager as a result of his qualification and now he is looking into training members of his new team.”

Train to Gain funding is available nationally to support skills training. Regionally, The Bournemouth and Poole College has also launched the Dorset Training Plus Programme which allocates funds to workers and employers in Dorset specifically, with grants to help them overcome any barriers to training.
