Hospital Throws A Lifeline To Apprentices
The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has opened up fresh job opportunities for a group of young people aged between 16 and 18.
The Trust has joined forces with The Bournemouth and Poole College to recruit and train thirty Apprentices who will learn various skills needed to help with future planning and the day to day running of the hospital.
Jan Ryan, Training Manager at the Trust said, “As a large local employer we have a responsibility to help young people get into work. Apart from the obvious careers that people automatically think of, we have a vast support network that keeps the hospital running efficiently. With this in mind we have recruited Apprentices and Adult Apprentices to join us in IT, admin and clerical work, plus housekeeping, porterage and other support roles. We are also hoping to attract young people into the field of health and social care training.”
The Trust, who has been working with The College for the past three years, started its Apprenticeship programme with twelve candidates working towards Support Services in Healthcare, and has subsequently followed up with ten further places in Health and Social Care. Several candidates were recruited during National Apprenticeships Week, but Jan is still willing to speak to any additional young people who would be committed to this career opportunity.
Julie-Anne Houldey, Director of Marketing at The College said, “We applaud the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for fresh thinking, and for opening up doors for young people to kick start their careers. Apprenticeships are an excellent opportunity to earn and learn at the same time, combining work at the hospital where they gain practical hands-on experience and college training where they work towards nationally recognised qualifications.”
“We all know the current challenges that many young people are facing when looking for employment. During the recession many employers are cutting back on staff recruitment, and when they do have vacancies they tend to offer jobs to people with more experience.”
The Bournemouth and Poole College offers Apprenticeships in seventeen different vocational areas. There are courses at different levels from Pre-Apprenticeship, through to Higher Apprenticeships which are equivalent to degree level. The College Apprenticeship Training Team is able to support employers looking to recruit trainees, plus young people and their parents who are seeking training opportunities.
