Poole Pottery
Pottery Revival Based on Skills
One of the world’s leading pottery manufacturers based on the south coast is currently enjoying a revival following a few turbulent years. Poole Pottery established in 1873 has been under new ownership for the past two years, and the new management team are proud that the business is going from strength to strength.
Sarah Morgan, General Manager for the Dorset-based company has been delighted to work with The Bournemouth and Poole College’s Business Enterprise team to help boost the skills of her workforce. Sarah has encouraged a range of her staff to undergo training which has been funded or partially funded through the government’s Train to Gain initiative.
To date, her team have undertaken management development, team-leader qualifications, retail skills and customer services training. Sarah said, “Flexibility has been important to us. The Business Enterprise team has taken note of this and have helped us pick and choose the training elements that are key to our business. Not only that, but the assessors have been willing to work around the operational needs of my staff which has meant that they have benefited from the training without it impacting on our core business."
Jacky Grant from Business Enterprise agrees that a flexible approach is what won Sarah over. “The Poole Pottery team is only small and to help them be successful all staff members need to be multi-skilled and able to work in all aspects of the company, from shop floor customer service, to behind the scenes buying and negotiating. We got to know Sarah and took the time to understand her specific business training requirements, and then came up with training solutions.”
The Business Enterprise team are available to support any local or regional employer from micro and SME to multi nationals. Their service includes free consultations including a training needs analysis, advice and information on a wide range of training options, in-house and bespoke training solutions, plus they can also signpost businesses to grants and subsidies for work-skills training.
