JC Fry & Sons Ltd

Learning Is A Family Affair
A government training initiative has been well received by the local Fry family from Southbourne who run JC Fry & Son Ltd, an electrical and electronics business established in 1928.jc-fry-and-son2_194

Julie and David Fry and their son Matthew see the core values in their business as ‘new technology with traditional values’ and pride themselves on offering a highly professional service to their customers. Recently, the family have taken advantage of Train to Gain at The Bournemouth and Poole College to help develop their work-related skills.

Still in his 20s and with the future in mind, Matthew who is studying a foundation degree in electronics at The College, saw an opportunity for his mother to take advantage of free skills training. Julie, who left school at fourteen with no qualifications, was encouraged to enrol for an NVQ2 in Business and Administration, and also for a level 1 maths class. Both courses were available through the Train to Gain initiative which offers grants to cover the costs of training.

Julie now has the learning bug and says “My maths skills and confidence in my own ability has increased so much that I have since gone on to achieve a level 2. It has given me a better understanding of my day to day activities such as wages, petty cash, reconciling bank statements and calculating VAT – now all done using computer technology so it’s also saving time. My training assessor Jason has given me some invaluable help and encouragement, and I’m now taking an ITQ qualification, partly funded through Train to Gain to boost my computer skills.”

Husband David added, “We’re a very small firm and the training has had a big impact. As well as boosting Julie’s confidence, she has made improvements and implemented business efficiencies which will benefit us and the customers of JC Fry & Son.”
