Services for Work-based and Distance Learners

Distance learners based off-site on programmes run by The College are welcome to use the Learning Resources Centres on the same terms as on-site students. However, some special arrangements may be necessary to assist these students and LRC staff are happy to liaise with tutors of off-site groups to facilitate ease of access.

As is the case with any student, identification will be required initially to verify the distance learning student’s attendance on a College programme and provide details of the course being studied. If the student is visiting one of the LRCs personally, this can be in the form of a College enrolment form or a letter from the tutor together with some personal identification. However, if preferred, LRC staff are happy to arrange the issue of LRC cards to an off-site group through the tutor to avoid the necessity for individual visits by the students. An information leaflet for each student will be supplied with the LRC card. If the group is receiving a College ID card this can be used as the LRC card.

No formal arrangements exist at present for sending books to remote locations other than the Fulcrum Centre, where a small collection of material is based, however students can nominate a representative to borrow material on their behalf if they are unable to visit the LRCs themselves during opening hours. The loan allocation for all students is 10 items and the normal loan period is 2 weeks, although this can be extended for distance learners through negotiation with their tutor. Items borrowed can be renewed twice if the item is not required by another user. Renewals may be made over the telephone or by email.

The eLibrary pages on the College web site provide a wealth of information to support distance learners. There are a range of online databases providing information on a wide variety of subjects. LRC staff have also published online guides to assist students with the use of these resources. Access to these databases is password controlled via the Athens Management System and any College student can apply online for an Athens User Name and Password through the web site. The eLibrary pages also provide online subject guides to assist with research, links to web sites through Information Gateways and online help with looking for information and compiling bibliographies.

The LRC catalogue is also available via the eLibrary pages with the facility for students to reserve items which are out on loan. If the material is available on the shelves students are welcome to contact the relevant LRC by telephone or email to ask that this material is held for them. Any item can be sent to whichever LRC it is easiest for the student to visit.

LRC staff are happy to visit Outreach Centres to give presentations on the range of electronic resources available and how to make best use of these. They can also offer sessions on research skills, advise on the facilities and services available through the LRCs and support distance learners using the VLE.

If a distance learner wishes to visit one of the LRCs at a pre-arranged time, a member of the LRC staff will be happy to offer advice and guidance on any aspect of the service. Alternatively, distance learners are welcome to ring or email any LRC for information and assistance.
