Taster Days and the Construction Diploma

Dates: Mondays & Fridays in summer term 2010        
Location: Bournemouth & Poole College, Fulcrum Centre at Tower Park
 
Duration: half or full day event with 2.5 hours sessions
Provisional timing: 9:30 to 12:00 and/or 12:30 too 15:00 - can be arranged to suit you
Numbers: up to 12 students per group/session
 
Suitable for students in Year 9 to 11 who consider a trade or professional career in construction. 
 
Benefits: students will
-   try their hand in a trade such as wood work (TBC for brickwork, painting & decorating)
-   talk to college staff and get to know the college workshops
-   find out about the NEW DIPLOMA in Construction and the Built Environment, apprenticeship schemes and  courses at the college.
 
Fees: £5 per student for materials and resources

Our Heritage - Corfe Castle

Stone Conservation, Medival Life, Local History and more

Dates: in summer term 2010, to be arranged to suit you                 
Location: Corfe Castle/ Burngate

Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours sessions
Provisional timing: 10:00 to 12:00 and/or 12:30 too 14:00 - can be arranged to suit you
Numbers: up to 15 studnets per group/session

Suitable for students in Years 7 to 11 to learn about conservation of listed monuments, historic building methods and local history. Sessions will be delivered by the National Trust and teachers are welcome to expand the visit with their own curriculum activites on site. For example, we had applied Maths sessions for Year 8 and 9 students in the castle grounds! In addition, we can organise a visit to Burngate Stone Centre for a 2.5 hours stone carving task.

Fees:  FREE at Corfe Castle with annual membership of the school
            (min. £3 per student for materials and resources at Burngate)

The Windpower Challenge

Build the Most Effective Wind-Powered Generator

Gifted & Talented Day supported by the Bournemouth & Poole College

Date: Saturday, 3 July 2010      
Location: Bournemouth & Poole College, Main Hall at Lansdowne Campus
 
Duration:  all day event
Provisional timing: 9:30 to 15:30
Numbers: up to 72 students in total

Suitable for students in Year 9, 10, 11 who are open to something different and innovative. Students will try their hand in a technical task and learn more about the fascinating opportunities in technical related careers.

The challenge is for students to work in teams competing against each other to plan, build and test the most effective wind-powered generator.  External experts will be on hand to give advice and support.

Benefits: Students will
-   participate in an extra-curricular, hands-on competition at the college
-   test their abilities in technical related subjects as well as their team working skills
-   develop work-related skills such as problem solving, time management and decision making
-   meet professionals and college lecturers to discuss career options
 
Fees: £30 per student (consessions or grants may be available)

Structure Challenge

Design Your Own...Olympic Stadium/ Emergency Shelter/ Vistor Centre

Dates: in summer term 2010, to be arranged to suit you
Location: your school hall or sports hall, to be arranged to suit you
 
Duration:  all day event
Provisional timing: 9:30 to 15:30 - can be arranged to suit you
Numbers: up to 100 students in total
 
Suitable for students in Year 8, 9, 10 or 11 to get inspired in technical related subjects and a career within the construction industry. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the wide variety of careers available within the construction industry. Students can also receive more information about the NEW DIPLOMA in Construction & the Built Environment. Please check out Past Events & Pictures
 
Benefits: Students work in teams of 5-6 and will 
-   design and build a model of a stucture such as a stadium, emergency shelter, or visitor centre
-   use technical understanding as well as team working abilities
-   develop work-related abilities - problem solving, decision making, organisational & presentation skills
  learn about the construction industry and the wide range of career opportunities within the industry
-   find out about the NEW DIPLOMA in Construction & the Built Environment.
 
Fees: £350 per event (and co-funded by the DCCC Steering Group)
