CPD - How to use Maths in Industry

Teacher Training Day on 9th February 2006 at The Study Gallery Poole

Teachers of secondary schools in the Bournemouth and Poole area received a taste of the working world to bring back to the classroom - an excellent opportunity to get a deeper insight into how Maths is used in the construction industry, to spend the day with professionals from the industry and to use the day to exchange ideas and views with colleagues.

George & Harding Director Barry Milburn introduced his company and career paths into the construction industry. Together with his colleague Gina Davenport, who is a Quantity Surveyor, they run a workshop highlighting the stages of the construction process where Maths is applied, for example, in planning, building and quantities. Julie Perry recently joined George & Harding and talked about her career development into the construction industry. Karen Dyke and Mark Loose from the Academy of Technology at The College joined the group at lunch for talks with the teachers. The afternoon concluded with a fantastic site visit of a construction site in Branksome, a 1.8m Care Home development by George & Harding. The site manager Alan Crab introduced teachers to practical applications of maths at a building site and hopefully sparked ideas to use in the class room.

The training day provided teachers with information about careers within the modern construction industry, and with means to help students to recognise the importance of curriculum subjects such as Maths, and how it is applied in the working world. This is an important platform for companies and organisations involved in all aspects of construction to showcase the industry and reach young people via their teachers. Construction offers diverse and exciting career opportunities and we want to encourage more young people, especially women, to join the construction industry in the future. We hope that we were able to inspire teachers to use the construction industry as a context of learning and that some of the pupils from the Dorset schools will consider a career in this important field.
