Sewing Skills

This is a course designed both for beginners to dress or garment making and also those with intermediate and more advanced skills.
The course teaches the skills and techniques necessary to make a garment of your choice and to a level that suits your expertise and interest. You will be introduced to a variety of technical equipment and sewing skills aimed at your level of ability.You will learn to take body measurements and transfer this information to a purchased pattern or you will be shown how to make your own pattern. You will be introduced to a variety of fabrics to help you select the appropriate material for your garment and then taught how to plan and layout your material for cutting. You will be shown how to use the sewing machine, alongside basic and intermediate sewing methods and sewing skills. Included will be instruction on how to fit a garment to the body to create a fully personalised outcome.
No formal qualifications are required for this course. We are happy to work with students of all abilities but an interest in garment construction is essential.
You will be supported on a weekly basis with continuous feedback on your progress. There will be a chance to show your work in our end of year show.
There will be an opportunity to progress on to further courses in this subject area that will run throughout the year to develop you skills. For those who are more committed, advice on higher level courses in Fashion and Textiles will be available.
You will have access to the College virtual learning environment (VLE) which can be accessed from any computer with internet access (at home, libraries or college) to download course materials and handouts etc.
