Apprenticeships are a popular choice for people looking for on-the-job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage. Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace, backed up by attendance at college just one day a week.
An Apprenticeship in Retail will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of routine retail related activities. You could work in a number of job related environments including selling, customer service, stock handling and visual merchandising. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.
Where possible staff from The College will find you an employer and a place of work (although students who are already employed are welcome to apply if sponsored by their employer). Your offer of Apprenticeship training will be dependent upon work placements being available.
Apprenticeships are a great option for school leavers who want to get straight onto the career ladder. An Apprenticeship is equivalent to 5 GCSE's.
To gain the full Apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:
- Level 2 Certficate in Retail Skills
- Level 2 Certificate in Retail Operations
- Functional Skills in Mathematics Level 1
- Functional Skills in Mathematics Level 1
The qualification is work-related and will relate specifically to your job role. You will complete mandatory and optional units which may include:
- Work effectively in your Retail team
- Sales
- Visual Merchandising
- Customer Service
- Organisational effectiveness
- Finance and Administration
There are no formal entry requirements although you will need to demonstrate an interest and positive attitude towards your chosen career. All applicants for Apprenticeship training will be required to attend an initial assessment and interview.
You will be continually assessed throughout your training. Most of the assessment will take place in the workplace, plus you will take some external tests/examinations for functional skills (if required) and the technical certificate. Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship on time.
On successful completion of this Apprenticeship you could progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Retail (Level 3) or in your chosen career at supervisory/management level.
Expect to earn at least £95.00 per week.
Whilst your technical skills and knowledge will develop over the course of your Apprenticeship you will also need to demonstrate to potential employers that you possess relevant skills and personal qualities and are willing to work and to learn.

- Ability to communicate with a range of people
