Apprenticeships are a popular choice for young people aged 16 - 24* looking for on-the-job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage. Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace, backed up by attendance at college just one day a week.
An Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of routine trade related activities. You will be working on site where your duties could encompass many areas of heating and ventilation such as health and safety, communication, central heating systems, scientific principles, hot water installations, site preparation and pipework fabrication. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.
Where possible staff from College Apprenticeships Training will find you an employer and a place of work (although students who are already employed are welcome to apply if sponsored by their employer). Your offer of Apprenticeship training will be dependent upon work placements being available.
Apprenticeships are a great option for school leavers who want to get straight onto the career ladder. An Apprenticeship is equivalent to 5 GCSE's.
* Please note priority is given to applicants under 19 years of age. Due to funding arrangements, places maybe limited for 19-24 year olds.
To gain the full Apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:
- NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating
- Key Skills in Application of Number Level 2
- Key Skills in Communication Level 2
- Key Skills in IT Level 1
The NVQ qualification is work-related and will relate specifically to your job role.
There are no formal entry requirements although you will need to demonstrate an interest in Plumbing and Heating and have literacy and numeracy skills to Level 1 or above. All applicants for Apprenticeship training will be required to attend an interview.
We must stress the importance of you contacting employers yourself as without an employer it will not be possible for you to commence your training.
You will be continually assessed throughout your training. Most of the assessment will take place in the workplace, plus you will take some external tests/examinations for key skills (if required) and technical certificate. Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship on time.
On successful completion of this Apprenticeship you could progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating(Level 3). You could also progress in your chosen career at supervisory/management level.
