Bournemouth & Poole College Course Information

Guide to Qualifications

In addition to traditional academic courses you will notice that The College offers many courses leading to vocational qualifications. These courses are designed to prepare you for the world of work and will often also provide a solid foundation for further study.

Vocational courses may include periods of work experience. Many of our courses offer the opportunity to gain practical skills by learning in realistic working environments e.g. motor vehicle workshops, kitchens and salons.

AS/A Levels
These qualifications are the traditional route to university but they are also of value if you hope to progress to employment at the end of the course. An AS level is made up of three units and takes one year. The A level (sometimes called A2) takes a further year of study during which students take three more units. Most AS/A levels are assessed through formal examinations.

GCSE
GCSE English and mathematics may be taken alongside some vocational courses. We do not offer other GCSE re-sits , however in certain circumstances, where GCSE education has been disrupted through illness or relocation for example, it may be possible to pursue a full time GCSE course. This is called Skills Track (GCSE) and more details can be found in the Next Steps prospectus (page 77).

International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate is a qualification recognised throughout the world. It is a two year course of high academic standards and intellectual rigour which gives a student the equivalent of 4 A levels. The IB is highly regarded by universities in the UK and abroad.

National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)
These qualifications reflect the skills needed to be competent in the workplace. They give students practical, hands-on experience. NVQs are assessed through the completion of logbooks and being observed/monitored by your tutors.

Introductory Diploma (Level 1 Diploma)
These are vocational, one year, introductory courses for students who join The College with no formal qualifications or who have achieved GCSEs with grades F and G. They give a grounding in a range of subjects as well as giving an opportunity to improve basic skills.

First/National Diploma/Certificate
These are vocational courses which combine academic learning with practical elements. They provide a broad base of skills and knowledge for particular career areas. The First Diploma lasts for one year. The National Certificate/Diploma is a two year course equivalent to 2/3 A levels which can lead to university and to employment.

Higher Education
The College offers a range of higher education qualifications in partnership with local universities including Bournemouth, Winchester and Southampton. With the cost of moving away from home for a degree becoming an increasingly large factor in choosing where to study, an opportunity to gain a degree or other higher qualification locally could be the perfect solution. Please see the Next Steps prospectus (pages 107-111) for more information.
