Introduction:
This course is for anyone with some experience in gardening or horticulture, who wishes to pursue a career in a nursery or garden centre. It is studied at The College's High Mead Community Farm.
Entry Requirements:
You will have completed a Level 1 qualification in a similar subject or have 3 GCSEs at grade A*-D. You should demonstrate an active interest in horticulture and land based studies.
Course Details:
You will cover the following units:
Core Units:
- Horticultural Science
- Principals of Horticultural Machinery
- Identification of Weeds, Pests and Diseases
- Health and Safety in Amenity Horticulture
Optional Units:
- Operation and Maintenance of Horticultural Equipment
- Establishment and maintenance of plants
- Identification and Use of Plants
- Establishment and Maintenance of Turf
- Fruit and Vegetable Cultivation
- Tractor Operation and Maintenance
You will also study literacy and numeracy with weekly tutorials. You will have regular meetings with your tutor to review your progress and have access to extra help and support for your learning should you need it.
Course Assessment:
You will be assessed through multiple choice online tests and separate assignments. You will also have to produce a portfolio of work.
Course Progression:
On successful completion you could progress to a Level 3 qualification at a specialist college or to employment or an apprenticeship training with a garden centre, nursery or horticultural maintenance company.
