The College Outreach Provision works in partnership with many specialist organisations in the community working with groups of people with a wide range of educational needs. Through this Outreach Provision we help students to access and sustain mainstream education.
The Outreach team is able to provide a complete advisory service to clients to help them meet their learning goals, and to provide learning solutions depending upon individual circumstances.
Many of our students have not been in an educational setting for several years and the courses available are often used a s a springboard to mainstream education, voluntary work or employment. Before joint the Access to Further Education programme, students may join a Primary Stage which, for example, could simply entail a 3-hour ‘taster’ workshop, introducing clients back into the learning environment and sampling what its like to be a student again. This is a wonderful ‘confidence booster’ and can help students who may be feeling worried or apprehensive.
The Access to Further Education Programme is an accredited programme and learners can achieve between levels 1 and 3. The programme consists of 4 main stages. Students normally progress through all stages but will be advised about which joining stage is best suited for them following discussion about their individual needs and learning goals.
The 4 main stages are:
this stage will help you discover which learning styles suits you best. It will help you gain confidence to develop the skills you need before moving on to other mainstream courses.
this module will aim to match your personal interests with a course that suits you. This is particularly ideal for anyone who may wish to change career direction or who has a strong interest in a specific subject.
this stage will extend your research about job and career opportunities in your chosen or preferred field.
once you complete the previous stages the infills programme will further develop your skills and enable you to access placement or voluntary work. You will then choose either to enter mainstream college for further education and training (which can lead onto university level) or progress into employment or voluntary work.
The above courses are delivered in a modular style with each stage lasting 10 weeks (with a 3 week gap between each stage) spread over a year. Times and locations are fairly flexible to suit the individual, with programmes delivered at community-based locations and also at the Lansdowne campus in central Bournemouth.
The Outreach team are able to offer unparalleled levels of personal support to our clients. We pride ourselves on providing new opportunities and gateways to learning in a relaxed, friendly and informal environment.
