The IT Learning Centre opened in November 2001.
The Centre is situated a stone’s throw from Bournemouth town centre (map) providing students with easy access to IT training facilities. The Centre Manager, Tony Collins, explains how the Centre operates and what new students can expect to find when they enrol.
“The Centre is run on a partnership basis between Bournemouth and Poole College and a national IT development company, Tektra Ltd. The aim of the Centre is to provide opportunities for people from Bournemouth, Poole and surrounding areas to learn new skills in computing and to achieve the new nationally recognised ITQ Level 2 qualification”.
This new qualification has been created as a result of significant consultations, market research and trialing with employers and training companies across the country. ITQ will give greater choice and flexibility which means a better fit with the real world and real jobs.
The course duration is a maximum of 48 weeks with attendance of a minimum of 4 hours per week. Although this is a Level 2 course, it is constructed in a way that even if you have never used a computer before then it will still be suitable. It is made up of two paths. Path 1 is aimed at employed learners and consists of Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Database whilst Path 2 is for home users who will learn Word Processing, Internet and Email. The programme is ideal for people who need flexibility as to when they attend the course and who want the convenience of choosing a session at a time to suit their own circumstances.
The Centre is open 64 hours a week between 9am and 9pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 5pm Friday and Saturday.
We have enrolled more than 5000 students since opening. Our oldest student is 91 and the youngest is 19.
