Choices for Adults is a programme aimed at developing students’ self-esteem and confidence and encouraging further independence. Throughout the course students will be introduced to all aspects of college life, and will be encouraged to develop personal, social and relevant work skills.
The staff work in partnership with other organisations including carers and social workers.
The Choices for Adults programme offers a breadth of study which enables the student to experience a wide range of vocational skills and leisure activities. These include:
Gardening, Horticulture, Art, Painting & Decorating, Drama and Dance, Paper-making, Floristry, Swimming, Printing, Basic computing and Sporting Activities.
The course is run over a period of 3 years for adults over 20 with mild/moderate or more severe learning difficulties/disabilities. Each student is allocated a personal tutor who will help them in all aspects of college life. The personal tutor is available to give one-to-one support as well as working with a small group of learners. The personal tutor will be responsible for monitoring progress and development of the individual student.
Students on the Choices for Adults programme will receive:
A large team of Learning Support Assistants help provide day to day support both in and out of the classroom. In some cases this can be individual support, but usually an assistant is allocated to a small group.
All students are strongly encouraged to look at their strengths and build upon them in order to progress effectively and manage their own lifestyles.
For students with communication difficulties, speech therapy is available.
Available to see individual students when necessary and also to advise staff on best teaching methods. Please ask for further information.
Students requiring counselling help beyond that normally offered by their personal tutor can receive confidential counselling from The College’s professional counselling team.
College is not just about hard work! Part of the ethos at The College is to develop learning through enrichment and social activities including excursions, sports and cookery.
Every student enrolling at The College is entitled to join the Students’ Union.
